15 oldest hotels in the world (Part II)

Many visitors come to the oldest hotels because of not only accomodations but also their long history.


Orso Grigio, San Candido, Italy:

Located in the heart of San Candido, Orso Grigio celebrated its 550th anniversary in 2013. The hotel was opened in 1300 and since then it had provided accommodation for merchants and aristocrats. Interlaken Hotel, Interlaken, Switzerland:

The Interlaken Hotel was originally a hospital and later a monastery. In 1323, this place was used as a guest house, and in 1491, the Interlaken Hotel was restored and renovated. Picture: Hotel Interlaken.


Blaue Gans, Salzburg, Austria:

The Blaue Gans hotel, which was founded in 1350, is the oldest inn in Salzburg, Austria. Not only is this a hotel located near historic sites like Mozart's birthplace, this is also the Salzburg's first art hotel, with nearly 100 works of art displayed everywhere. Picture: Arthotel blaue gans.


Gastagwirt, Eugendorf, Austria:

The Gastagwirt hotel is run by a family. The family also has a separate farm offering meat and milk for breakfast buffet and a variety of enticing dishes. It originally served as a pub in 1380 and then became a hotel due to its location along a local trade route. Photo: Gastagwirt.


Hotel Krone, Solothurn, Switzerland:

The Krone hotel, now La Couronne, which was established in the XV century, with 31 rooms, is located in the middle of the old town of Thun. Photo: Altstadt Hotel Krone Luzern. Just 600 metres from the A1 motorway, Hotel Krone is located in the historic centre of Wangen an der Aare. It features a restaurant with a garden terrace, free Wi-fi and free private parking.


Old Hall Hotel, Buxton, England:

Old Hall Hotel was built in 1573, but some historians suggest that this place has a longer history. The hotel was once the prison of Mary, Queen of Scots, at the behest of Queen Elizabeth I for her involvement in the most serious conspiracy against Elizabeth. Photo: Visitbuxton.


Gripsholms Värdshus, Mariefred, Sweden:

Gripsholms Värdshus, which was built on the foundation of a Carthusian monastery from the 14th century is the oldest hotel in Sweden. In 1609, German Jocim Smockm established the hotel, and today, there is a room in the hotel named after him. Photo: Svenska Kulturpärlor.


Petit Palace Posada del Peine, Madrid, Spain:

Petit Palace Posada del Peine, which is 400 years old,  is considered the oldest hotel in Spain. Since its establishment in 1610, the hotel has undergone many upgrades and renovations. All of the hotel rooms are now equipped with an iPad and free wifi for guests. Photo: Eurocheapo.
