4 common mistakes when using deodorant and antiperspirant

Deodorant and antiperspirant are truly useful when you want to hide your body odor. However, sometimes you feel that these products do not help. So, what are the reasons?

Currently, there are two main products that help block the body odor, they are deodorant and antiperspirant. Antiperspirant helps prevent the body from excessive sweating, controlling the body odor. Meanwhile, products labeled ‘deodorant’ function as a kind of disinfectant, which appear to be effective to eliminate the bacteria, but they cannot control the amount of sweat secreted.

The ways these two products functions are distinguishable, but both of them are used for a common purpose which is to reduce or prevent unpleasant smells on the body.

According to Dr. Dawn Harper, a specialist from the Embarrassing Bodies TV show on Chanel 4 (UK), not many people know the real effects of the deodorant and antiperspirant they buy. In addition, there are four mistakes that people usually make when they use these cosmetics. 

Applying deodorant and antiperspirant on wet skin 

According to Dr. Harper, water on the skin’s surface interferes with the absorption of active ingredients in the deodorant, reducing the effectiveness of the product. 

Therefore, in order to get the best results, you should dry your skin before using roll-on deodorant or antiperspirant.

Using deodorant and antiperspirant in the morning

Many people usually use deodorant in the morning, right before leaving the house, thinking that it is a way to ‘save’ the pleasant smell. However, this is a completely wrong conception. Dr. Harper recommends using deodorant every night before bedtime, in order that the liquid is completely absorbed and able to maintain its effect much longer. You should wash with soap and water after a whole night using deodorant.

Using hair dryer

Many people use hair dryers to dry the deodorant before getting dressed. Dr. Harper recommends that the deodorant and antiperspirant should be dried naturally instead of using hair dryers which may deactivate some important substances in the deodorant. 


Deodorant and antiperspirant smell really good and they make you totally attractive, but you should control the frequency of using them. If you use these products too often but forget cleaning at the end of the day or in the next morning, it will cause the pores to be clogged. In the long run, some problems may appear on those skin areas. 

It is advisable that you use deodorant and antiperspirant once or twice a week only instead of using  them everyday.
