Translating a joke

An American writer told a joke to a Japanese university.

An American writer went to talk at a university in Japan with the help of an interpreter. At the beginning of the talk, the writer told a funny joke, a really long one, and then stopped for the interpreter to do his work. The speaker was truly surprised that his interpreter only said a few words, and all the students suddenly laughed.

At the end of the talk, the writer thanked the guy for translating his whole thing very well. He asked:

- How did you just translate such a long joke to Japanese, just only with a few words?

- I did not tell the whole story. I only said that you just told a joke, and told the whole hall to laugh.
