Walking brings many benefits to our health. A variety of positive outcomes have been found after many researches. Also, you can observe some long-term benefits of going for a walk regularly. However, there are some other advantages of walking that might surprise you.

1. Walking helps control the effects of genes that promote weight gain 


Researchers from Harvard University observed 32 genes which had been proved to easily lead to obesity on over 12,000 people in order to determine how many of these genes actually contribute to the body weight. The research group detected the decrease of those genes’ effects in participants who walked for about an hour a day. 

2. Going on foot helps prevent the feeling of hunger 

A study conducted by scholars from the University of Exeter indicated that 15 minutes of walking can eliminate the appetite for chocolate and also reduces the amount of chocolate you eat in stressful situations. The latest research confirms that walking can prevent the feeling of hunger as well as the amount of sugary foods you eat. 

3. Walking reduces the risk of breast cancer 

A study conducted by the researchers from American Cancer Society implied that women who walked for at least seven hours a week had a 14% lower risk of breast cancer than those who spent 3 hours (or less) walking every week. Even to women with obesity or other health conditions that can lead to breast cancer, the research's result still kept its value. 

4. Walking helps reduce joint pains 


Some research findings have pointed out that going for walk relieves arthritis. Walking 5-6 miles a week can even prevent the formation of arthritis. Walking protects and strengthens the joints, especially on the knees and hips, the two body's part which are susceptible to osteoarthritis. 

5. Walking strengthens the immune system 

Walking regularly can help protect you against colds and flu. A study conducted on 1,000 men and women showed that people who walked for at least 20 minutes a day, and at least 5 days a week, had much fewer illness days than those who performed walking once a week or less. And if they were sick, those hard-working people would need less time to recover and the symptoms would be remarkably milder also.
