Sports shoes are gradually 'usurping' high heels?

The trend of women's shoes is moving from the glamorous high heels to the convenient sports shoes.

There are more and more women choosing sporty styles with comfortable outfits, and high heel sales are under the influence of this trend.

Recommerce company ThredUp has recently announced newest data showing that in the past three months, the act of “heel purge” has increased 38%, while sneaker sales have increased 46%. "Celebrities have been ditching their heels on the red carpet, and it turns out our customers are purging heels from their closets as well," says Erin Wallace, Brand Director at ThredUp. "Our data demonstrates that Athleisure is certainly a prevailing trend as women seek out more casual, comfortable footwear."

According to NPD Group's Retail Tracking Service, heel sales were down 11% in the United States in 2017, while sales of women's sneakers increased 37%.

There are many reasons for the fact that sports shoes are becoming a new symbol, a commodity sought after by fashionistas. Today, sports shoes do not only appear in sportswear companies such as Nike or Adidas, but also in the luxurious collections of high-end brands such as Balenciaga or Louis Vuitton.

Not only for ordinary consumers, there are also many celebs who are getting increasingly tired of wearing uncomfortable high heels. Tennis star Serena Williams once proudly admitted that she had worn a pair of sneakers to attend a wine party after the royal wedding. She also posted a short clip about this fun fact on Instagram with the caption: “Little known fact: I often wear sneakers under my evening gown. These @maisonvalentino @pppiccioli gave to me last min. I told him be careful I tend to be comfy for long nights #beingserena”

Women have also dropped high heels as an act of protest against gender inequality. At the Cannes Film Festival in May, Kristen Stewart removed her stilettos on the red carpet to protest the rule of requiring women to wear high heels when attending this event.

Some even speculate that the decline in sales of high heels may also be related to the #MeToo movement and the reports of related issues. The #MeToo movement truly evokes a strong wave of women's protections, while also making people more aware of their own will. Women today choose their own dress and outfit to be themselves, not just to be attractive and beautiful in the eyes of everyone, especially the opposite gender.

There are also other opinions that flat shoes, typically sneakers will give women the ability to escape countless dangerous situations. According to Business Insider, high heels are often more inconvenient to walk than flat shoes, making it difficult for women to escape in unpredictable circumstances.

According to psychologists, there are now many bad conditions that require the use of sports shoes, and it only takes a few minutes on the internet to see that.
