A series of hidden details in “The Nun”
* Note: The article might spoil some content of the movie
Signs of Valak:
As in “The Conjuring 2” (2016), before Valak's appearance, the name of evil has flickered. When Victoria (Charlotte Hope) commits suicide at the beginning of “The Nun”, audiences will notice the word "LAK" in the window of fate. At the scene introducing Irene's character (Taissa Farmiga) at a Catholic school, there is a seesaw that some kids are playing. When looking closely, the viewer can see the iron bars of the toy form the word "Valak". Finally, the car that Burke (Demián Bichir) put his luggage on when he arrived in Romania was numbered 6-VA-01-LAK.
“You Belong to Me”:
The melody of "Can not Help Falling in Love" in "The Conjuring 2", or "You Are My Sunshine" in "Annabelle: Creation" (2017) was to increase the emotions for viewers. With “The Nun”, the production team picked Jo Stafford's "You Belong to Me," a 1950s hit that set the stage for the film. "You Belong to Me" in the film is like the warning Valak wants to give to Burke and Irene.
Connecting to "Annabelle: Creation":
Valak appeared briefly at "Annabelle: Creation" in a photo Charlotte originally showed to doll maker Mullins (Anthony LaPaglia). In the photo, she is with three friends Maria, Anna, and Lucia, while the ghost Valak is flickering behind. In “The Nun”, the picture appears and is hung on the wall of Carta Monastery.
Valak once made Lorraine Warren (Vera Farmiga) and the audience once terrified when suddenly appearing in the mirror in “The Conjuring 2”. In “The Nun”, Irene has the same experience with the mirror set in the altar. Later, the film moves to Frenchie (Jonas Bloquet) in a pub. He sees a mirror covered after a young girl in the area died. In the local tradition, they cover the mirror so that the deceased could not see themselves. The fact that Valak appears in the mirror shows that she is seeking to kill Irene, and Lorraine Warren later.
The Farmiga sisters:
Vera and Taissa Farmiga, who plays Irene and Lorraine Warren, are sisters and have very similar looks. Now the viewers are waiting to see if Irene and Lorraine Warren have a relationship in the movie universe because they both have psychic powers and can defeat Valak.
Connecting to “The Conjuring”:
Even though Irene and Lorraine Warren are unrelated, the movie “The Nun” still owns the connection to the first episode of the movie universe. At the end of the new film, Frenchie reveals that his real name is Maurice. A cross crosses his neck, which reveals that the young man is hunted by Valak. Maurice is the haunted man appearing in the video Ed and Lorraine Warren show at the lecture hall in the opening segment of “The Conjuring” (2013).
