New threats from iOS 11 bug
A new bug, discovered by the Mobile World blog, shows that sending a character in the Telugu language of India to iOS devices will crash Apple’s iOS Springboard in notification. In this case, you should wait for Springboard to restart itself instead of pressing the key combination to force restart, otherwise, the phone will have bootloop issues and the only way you can do is to restore the phone from DFU mode.
The funny thing is, when you turn off notification and there’s no error, the Messages application will be blocked every time you open it and try to display this character. Currently, the only way to regain access to your Messages application is to have another friend sending you a message and try to delete the thread containing that malicious character.
This bug not only affects iOS, even watchOS and macOS crashed the system when trying to display this character. Applications such as Note, Safari, and the App Store on macOS or other Apple products also crash when you paste this character into the input fields.
The dangerous character
Furthermore, this bug also occurs on third-party apps like Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp, Gmail, and Outlook for iOS. These applications are disabled when receiving this message and it is really hard to fix and remove this message. It is known that Telegram and Skype are not affected. It seems like Apple has been aware of this problem and has fixed the issue in the public beta version of iOS 11.3.
This is not the first time that iOS has crashed due to weird characters, URLs or even videos. Last month, iPhone also crashed when after receiving a special link, but Apple was able to resolve it with the release of iOS 11.2.5. In late 2016, a newly discovered bug was said to be able to freeze iOS devices when a user tried to play a specific video in Safari.
As Apple faces more security issues and software bugs, the company is focusing on reliability and performance in iOS 12 compared to the new features. Reports indicate that Apple is delaying some major iOS features until next year in order to focus on the stability and performance in iOS 12.
Lately, Apple has released iOS 11.2.6 to fix the problem. The company has released updates for watchOS, tvOS and macOS to prevent incidents occurring on these platforms. This is the third time over the past few months, Apple has released updates for iOS 11 to fix an iPhone bug.
Besides fixing problems with characters in the Telugu language, iOS 11.2.6 also fixes connectivity issues with third-party applications.
