Is video game movie curse broken by “Tomb Raider”?
According to the Hollywood Reporter, Hollywood has been producing many adaptations of video games in the past few years, but they cannot still gain much real success.
Lara Croft is back on the big screen again in Tomb Raider, Roar Uthaug‘s adaptation of the popular video game series. Alicia Vikander is the titular tomb raider, embarking on a dangerous, globe-trotting quest. The character has had two previous big screen adaptations before – Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life, both starring Angelina Jolie. Neither of those films were particularly good. Lara Croft: Tomb Raider (2001) by Angelina Jolie reached $ 300 million in revenue, but only scored 20% on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics claimed that Lara Croft: Tomb Raider had a boring sceenscript, weird action scenes and over-exploitation of the physical appeal of Angelina Jolie. The second installment of The Cradle of Life reached only $ 160 million. In particular, the scene of Lara Croft punching shark was badly criticized by both critics and audience.
So does Vikander’s take on the character rise above the previous films? Apparently not. The Tomb Raider review embargo has lifted, and the general consensus seems to be that this is yet another disappointing video game movie – a mixed bag at best.
Other large-scale movies adapted from video games such as Assassin's Creed, Warcraft or Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within are also considered disasters. Only Resident Evil movie series by Milla Jovovich has achieved impressive commercial success with over $ 1 billion in revenue. However, the series is also criticized for its low quality.
Alicia Vikander received valuable praises for her role as Lara Croft.
Hollywood is still pursuing video game because of the great appeal of the classic games. World of Warcraft attracted 12 million subscribers in 2010, Assassin's Creed has sold more than 100 million copies since 2007. Angry Birds mobile games have been downloaded more than 3 billion times.
According to Hollywood Reporter, the Tomb Raider 2018 version is not really excellent, but is still a rare victory of the film adaptation of the video game. Like Angelia Jolie, Alicia Vikander won the Oscar before taking on the role of Lara Croft. However, the two beauties have showed their acting talent in different ways.
Alicia Vikander's Tomb Raider is different from Angelina Jolie's previous version.
Tottenham's Tomb Raider score was not so impressive, but it was still the highest rated video game of all time. According to Box Office Mojo, Tomb Raider is expected to earn about between $23 and $25 million in North America over the weekend.
