Recently, in an interview on E! News, Cate Blanchett expressed her hope that her role of Hela in the blockbuster Thor: Ragnarok opens more opportunities for actresses to take on interesting and challenging roles in the MCU.
The ever Oscar-winning actress will be first featured in a Marvel’s superhero project as the main antagonist. The super villainess with the power to take away the superhero Thor’s powerful hammer Mjolnir is also the most anticipated character in the film.
The Goddess of Death Hela played by Cate Blanchett, is MCU's first female antagonist.
Cate Blanchett shares the hope that there will be more female villains in Marvel Comics coming out on the big screen like her Goddess of Death Hela soon.
“I didn’t realize until Marvel told me that I was inhabiting the first female Marvel villain onscreen,” the actress told E! News at Comic Con. “I thought, ‘Surely not.’ Well, no actually that’s true! There’s been many, many, many in the comic books, but they’ve been a little tardy in bringing them to the screen, so hopefully there will be a lot more villainesses.”
In the Marvel comic, Hela is the Goddess of Death ruling the hell Hel and Niflheim. Hela expands his power and is defeated by Thor. Therefore, Thor and many Asgard gods become enemies of Hela.
Before the events of Ragnarok, Hela was imprisoned for many years in Asgard. However, when he occupied the throne of the God Odin in the final part of “Thor: The Dark World”, the evil God Loki accidentally freed Hela.
The Goddess of Death Hela is considered as the Marvel’s most anticipated character this year.
That is why Hela decided to destroy the Asgard world. In addition, Hela in the Marvel comic is also the lover of super-evil Thanos, who has the power to destroy the universe. Hela is the link between this part and Thanos, who will appear in the war in Avengers 3.
Hela's attack on Asgard causes the God of Thunder Thor to be exiled to Sakaar where he is forced to become a gladiator and loses the power of a God.
Thor will be with the Hulk, Loki and the warrior of Askardian Valkyrie in the fight against Hela.
One of the most shocking details in the first trailer of Thor: Ragnarok is when Hela destroys Thor's god hammer Mjolnir. Mjolnir's hammer was made in the heart of a star, with destructive power. But Thor's famous weapon is suddenly crushed by Hela with one hand.
With no weapon in hand, Thor teams up with his former teammate Hulk / Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo), Loki's brother (Tom Hiddleston) and Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson) to fight Hela.
“That had me at ‘hello’ actually,” Blanchett said. “I thought that was really exciting that they were prepared to destroy Thor’s power in the first few minutes. It’s a nice entrance.”
“Half of my costume was done in post,” she said. “So a lot of the time I was trying to look fierce and bad and indomitable in a [motion capture] suit, which is pretty hard to do,” she added.
Thor: Ragnarok, directed by Taika Waititi, is expected to be released on November 3.
