Christopher Nolan reveals why he always hides Tom Hardy’s face under masks
In the flying scene of Dunkirk (2017), Tom Hardy totally nailed it when he played Farrier-the brave Spitfire pilot of the Royal Air Force. Inside the Spitfire drastically struggling against Germany force, Tom Hardy excellently acted only with his eyes since most of his face was hidden under a mask (as usual).
Though Tom Hardy’s performance does not last long in the movie and his role does not say much as well, the talented actor still amazed any audiences with his exceptionally amazing acting. He has definitely succeeded in playing a heroic pilot obsessing the audience with his straight face and emotionally deep eyes.
Director Christopher Nolan absolutely believes in Tom Hardy’s ability to act with his eyes
Talking about his favorite actor, director Christopher Nolan opened that he decided to keep hiding Hardy’s face in his blockbuster because he had been deeply impressed by the actor's splendid performance as he played Bane in The Dark Knight Rises (2012).
“I was pretty thrilled with what he did in The Dark Knight Rises with two eyes and couple of eyebrows and a bit of forehead. I thought let’s see what he can do with no forehead, no real eyebrows, maybe one eye,” said Nolan.
Dunkirk director also shared that the pilot role in his movie was not meant to belong to Tom Hardy, but when this role is written, the first name popping up in his mind was no one else but Tom Hardy.
Tom Hardy has played various roles with his head partially hidden
The director confirmed: “Of course Tom, being Tom, what he does with single eye acting is far beyond what anyone else can do with their whole body. That is just the unique talent of the man, he’s extraordinary.”
In addition to Tom Hardy's outstanding aptitude for controlling his facial muscles, this actor is regarded as a master of acting in narrow spaces, which can be seen in Locke (2013).
