Are they Hollywood's 10 bombs in 2018? (Part I)

After a series of horror blockbusters suffered a tough time in box offices in January, What Culture published the list of Hollywood bombs this year.

Mortal Engines (Released on December 13, with the production budget of $ 100 million and the estimated gross of $ 60 million, the movie might make $ 140 million loss including advertising costs)

The movie which revolves around the post-apocalyptic world is adapted from Philip Reeve's 2001 novel of the same name, produced by Peter Jackson and directed by Christian Rivers. Despite the expectation of the professionals, the audience is still indifferent to this movie because of the hard-to-access content. In addition, the film will be debuted at the end of the year and have to compete with more well-known franchises such as Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Man, Aquaman, Bumblebee: The Movie and Mary Poppins Returns.

Alita: Battle Angel  (Released on July 20, with the production budget of $ 270 million and the expected gross of $ 270 million, the movie might get $ 140 million loss including advertising costs)

Although the movie is produced by James Cameron, this is Robert Rodriguez (Spy Kids, Machete)'s first high-budget cinematic work. In addition, spending $ 200 million on the adaptation of a well-known manga book is a risky decision as the Japanese comic book adaptations are often not highly appreciated  in Hollywood.

hollywood-bombs-3

The Meg (Launched on August 10, with the production budget of $ 150 million and the estimated revenue of $ 180 million, the movie is expected to make $ 120 million loss including advertising costs)

Even though it's a combination of Hollywood and China, and features the well-known action stars such as Jason Statham, Bingbing Li and Ruby Rose, the movie is still hard to appeal to the public attention because of the old topic. The movie needs at least $ 300 million to be financially successful, but this is nearly impossible because it will be released at the same time as Mission Impossible 6 and The Predator.

hollywood-bombs-4

Alpha (Launched on March 8, with the production budget of $ 50 million and the estimated revenue of $ 40 million, the movie is expected to suffer $ 60 million loss including promotional expenses)

Being a low-budget movie, box office revenue can hardly be high. The film revolves around the war between human beings and natural at the early time. This is an ambitious film project from director Albert Hughes and screenwriter Dan Wiedenhaupt.

hollywood-bombs-5

A Wrinkle in Time (Launched on March 9, with the production budget of $ 100 million, and the estimated revenue of $ 190 million)

Although Disney has many things to promote such as the appearance of Oprah Winfrey, the movie has not been mentioned much on the media even though the release date is coming soon. The film failed to link with the public and utilize celebrity names such as Chris Pine and Reese Witherspoon.
