24-carat gold palm and 71 jewels for 71st Cannes
24-carat gold palm is produced by Chopard.
Cannes International Film Festival was born in 1939, but there was no Palm d’ Or award at the beginning. The highest award at that time was given to the best director by the name of "The Grand Prize of the International Film Festival", which was a work of art by a well-known contemporary artist.
It was not until 1954 that Robert Favre Le Bret, the founder and president of the Cannes Film Festival, proposed the idea of the Palm d’ Or. A lot of jewelry makers are invited, finally Lucienne Lazon's designs are selected. The first film to be awarded the Palme d'Or was "Marty" by director Delbert Mann. However, from 1964 to 1974, the Cannes Film Festival returned with the title of " The Grand Prize of the International Film Festival". So, it was until 1975 that the Palme d'Or was officially re-introduced and became a symbol of the Cannes Film Festival.
Co-president and artistic director of Chopard went to the Cannes Film Festival.
Palme d'Or is given annually to the director of the best film. But at this moment, the shape of the Palms remains the same as that of Lazon. After that, it underwent several redesigns and until 1998, its modern form has officially maintained until now.
The design of the golden palm is made by Swiss jewelry maker Chopard. The Palm is made of 24-carat gold, hand-crafted in a wax mold and then attached to a piece of cut crystal. It was placed in a blue leather bag.
